The Two Small Add-Ons
Neither of these is dramatic. Both show up in the specific, annoying moments where their absence is felt sharply.
Rental reimbursement
If your car is in the shop after a covered claim, this helps pay for a rental while it's there. The structure is usually a daily allowance up to a maximum number of days, and both figures are set by the policy — which is why reading them matters. A repair that runs longer than the covered days leaves the tail end to you.
It applies to covered claims, not to ordinary maintenance. If your car's in for a service, that's not what this is for.
Roadside assistance
Towing, jump starts, lockouts, flat tire changes, fuel delivery. If you already carry an auto-club membership, you may be buying it twice — worth checking before adding it. If you don't, having it on the policy is usually inexpensive.
The honest framing
These are convenience coverages, not protection coverages. They should never come at the expense of adequate liability limits or a deductible you can actually pay. Get the structural coverage right, then decide on these with whatever's left in the budget.
The one that catches people
Declining rental reimbursement and then having a two-week repair. It's a small line item that turns into a real bill when a body shop is waiting on parts. Ask what it costs on your quote before deciding it's optional.
See both priced alongside everything else.
Read the limits, not just the price
Rental reimbursement is normally written as a daily amount up to a maximum number of days, and both halves decide whether it actually helps. A repair delayed waiting on a part can outlast the covered days, and a daily allowance below local rental prices leaves you topping it up. Ask what your daily figure would realistically rent nearby, and what happens when the covered days run out.
Check for duplication first
Roadside assistance in particular is often already provided elsewhere — an auto-club membership, a credit card, or a newer vehicle's manufacturer programme. Any of those may already cover a tow. It costs nothing to check, and it is a common place to find yourself paying twice for the same thing.

Does rental coverage pay for any car I want?
It pays up to a daily amount, so a more expensive rental means covering the difference. Ask what your daily limit is and what that realistically rents locally.
Is roadside assistance worth it if I have an auto club?
Often not — that's usually duplicate coverage. Compare what each provides before paying for both.
Does using roadside assistance count as a claim?
Treatment varies by carrier and by how the service is structured. Ask yours specifically if you expect to use it more than occasionally.
